Donating your fine home furnishings will help many homeless animals find safe haven at Walton County's only no kill shelter, The Alaqua Animal Refuge.

Alaqua Animal Refuge, an independent, non-profit organization located on Florida's Emerald Coast, advocates the general welfare and humane treatment of animals by providing shelter, prevention of pet overpopulation and adoption services. Located down a winding gravel road on a picturesque, 10-acre farm in Freeport, Fla., once homeless, lost and abused animals run and play in sun-soaked pastures, swim in cool clean ponds, relax on breezy screened porches and graze in lush green fields. These animals and many like them, usually more than 300 at any given time, have found safety and care at Alaqua Animal Refuge Inc., a unique full-service, no-kill shelter.

Ray and Vicki Dollar, animal lovers and owners of Resort Resale, fine furniture consignment company, in collaboration with Alaqua, will take your donated items and offer them for resale on consignment at their store located in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida.

If you have anything from one item or a whole household to donate, know that it will be very appreciated and will help with the enormous overhead of nearly $30,000.00 a month to keep the refuge running.

NWFLAA Spring Festival of the Arts Poster Competition

The first annual NWFLAA Spring Festival of the Arts poster competition is upon us. Since this is the first art festival hosted by the Northwest Florida Arts Association, the poster content and style is up to the artist. All media is accepted. The winning artist receives a $200 cash award.

Submission Deadline: The deadline is January 30, 2010. All artists will be notified of the outcome of the competition by February 5, 2010.

Submission Requirements: All entries must be a minimum size of 16”x24”, and no more than 24”x36”. Vertical orientation is required. Digitally created designs must be available in a high-resolution format if selected. All artwork must be original and unpublished. The festival name and date will be added to the final selection.

The selected design will be reproduced on posters, T-shirts, and other NWFLAA promotional items that will be for sale during the festival. This is a major source of fundraising for Northwest Florida Arts Association. A limited number of signed copies of the poster will be available. The artist will be asked to sign the posters.

Each entry must include the artist’s name, address, and phone number attached to the back of the entry. No more than three designs per artist may be submitted.

Entries need to be mailed to, or dropped off at – ASAP Graphics, 98 Eglin Pkwy NE #5, Fort Walton Beach, FL 32548.

NWFLAA reserves the right to accept or reject all work submitted during this competition. Northwest Florida Arts Association, Inc accepts no liability for damaged and/or lost artwork.

Designs submitted must include return postage and appropriate mailing material and/or packaging. Entries that do not include postage will not be returned by mail. Entries dropped off must be picked up by February 12, 2010.

The winning entry becomes the property of Northwest Florida Arts Association, Inc. The artist retains the copyright of the design image, but NWFLAA reserves the right to unlimited reproduction and use of the image or parts of the image for arts festival materials and products for sale.

Founding members are not eligible for this competition.

The Full Circle Gallery is currently taking submissions for the Tote Project. We are creating a line of tote bags featuring logos created by local artists. This month's theme is "Buy Handmade." Submitted images should convey ideas about the importance of buying locally made or handmade objects. In addition to receiving a tote bag with their image on it, The winning artist will be highlighted on our website and have a chance to sell their work in the retail part of our gallery. "Halloween Film Festival" Competition Announced by

Production Services Association of Northwest Florida

Filmmakers of all ages and skill levels are encouraged to produce a short film in the "fright" genre (being horror, suspense thriller, science fiction/fantasy, scary comedy, or Halloween themed. The deadline for submission is October 28, 2009. All movies that meet requirements will be screened on Halloween Day (Saturday, October 31st) at the Cinema Plus theater in downtown Fort Walton Beach. The submission requirements are:

No entry fee required
Participants do not need to be members of the PSA of NWF to compete.
The finished movie must be between 2 – 9 minutes in length, including opening titles and closing credits
The movie must be in 16:9 widescreen format and submitted on DVD or as a video file (AVI, MOV, or MPEG format) on disc or flash drive
No copyrighted materials can be used without proof of ownership or letter of permission (buy-out music or stock footage/graphics is permitted)
Submissions must include talent and location releases
The movie must be rated between "G" and "PG-13", based on www.MPAA.com guidelines
The PSA of NWF reserves the right to refuse an entry for poor production values (lighting, audio, script, editing, continuity, etc…)
Judging will be handled in three tiers. Moviegoers will participate in the judging at the Halloween Day screening. The movies will then be available for online judging from November 1-10, 2009. A panel of PSA members who are not participants in the competition will provide the final judging round. The winners will be determined from the results from all three judging rounds. Winners will be announced on November 11, 2009, at the public meeting of the Production Services Association of NW Florida, held at Fokker’s Pizza & Sports Pub in downtown Fort Walton Beach, starting at 6pm. Along with bragging rights, prizes will be awarded for first, second, and third place winners as well as honorable mentions.

Filmmakers of all ages and skill levels are encouraged to participate. "This is going to be a great event," said RJ Murdock, president of the PSA of NWF. "I’m looking forward to seeing what kind of talent the Emerald Coast has to offer."

For anyone who hasn’t heard, our theme for downtown this year is Zombies!
The Fort Walton Jaycees are attempting to break the Guinness Book of World Record for The largest Zombie Walk.
-Registration will begin 4:00 @ Fokker's, the cost is 2 canned goods for charity. There will be a make up artist on site for anyone wishing to get "Zombified” @ a small donation.
-This can be a great way to advertise our Downtown Halloween event. We want to make this the biggest Halloween yet.
-The Zombie walk will conclude @ 7:00. The Grim Reaper will lead the Zombies down 98 to the graveyard and the zombies will then break into the Michael Jackson “Thriller” dance.

Thriller Dance Lessons: There will be dance lessons held Mons. & Weds. 7:30 - 8:30 pm at Barefoot Weddings begining Mon. 09/21, cost $5.00 per class/per person open to anyone (including the public) who wants to learn the dance and participate. We prefer pre-registration just shoot an e-mail ladybkaren@mchsi.com however, no one will be turned away. Please let everyone you know, see or meet about this, the more zombies dancing on the corner the better.

They will need them to be completed by Oct. 10th. Please e-mail and let us know if you are planning to make one. We don’t want the graveyard to be empty!!!
-You can purchase the foam board at Home Depot or Lowes, 1 sheet can make 4 or more headstones so if you and your neighbors would like to split the cost, it will be a very inexpensive way to decorate the graveyard.

"Halloween Horror Film Festival Contest"

On Saturday, October 31st, the Production Services Association of Northwest Florida (PSA of NWF) will be hosting a "Halloween Horror Film Festival Contest" to feature short films produced by local filmmakers. The plan is to have showings from 2-4pm at Cinema Plus. Moviegoers will be free to walking in free of charge and vote for their favorite film (as well as order food/drinks).
The contest winners will be announced and showcased again at our November 11th meeting, 6pm at Fokkers Sports Pub.

We are very excited about this contest and hopes it brings out the best of our local filmmakers as well as some good entertainment for our downtown visitors.

The Full Circle Gallery is currently taking submissions for the Tote Project. We are creating a line of tote bags featuring logos created by local artists. This month's theme is "Buy Handmade." Submitted images should convey ideas about the importance of buying locally made or handmade objects. In addition to receiving a tote bag with their image on it, The winning artist will be highlighted on our website and have a chance to sell their work in the retail part of our gallery. Images need to be original, monochromatic, full-size, high-resolution jpegs (300dpi, no more than 10x10 inches). Annie’s "Sandy" coming to the FWB Library

HPCC Yard Sale September 19th
Fort Walton Beach - The Fort Walton Beach Heritage Park and Cultural Center and Friends of the Museums, Inc., will hold a white tent yard sale to raise funds for the City museums on Saturday, September 19th from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The fundraising event will be located on the Camp Walton Schoolhouse Museum grounds, 127 Miracle Strip Parkway SE, in historic downtown Fort Walton
Beach. Donations of items to be sold for the fundraising event are welcome and may be dropped off at Heritage Park during regular museum hours. All proceeds will benefit the three museums under Heritage Park’s care, the Schoolhouse, Indian Temple Mound Museum and Garnier Post Office Museum.
The Friends of the Museums, Inc., is a non-profit organization who raise funds and provide volunteers to help support archaeology, history, heritage, educational projects, programs and events of Heritage Park. The organization is dedicated to supporting the Indian Temple Mound and Museum, the Camp
Walton Schoolhouse Museum and the Garnier Post Office Museum. The City of Fort Walton Beach Heritage Park and Cultural Center is a community outreach division of the City and is committed to providing area historical educational programming.
